It seems like everywhere we look we hear, "skin barrier this" and "skin barrier that", but a focus on the skin barrier is far more than skincare marketing. For many it's the foundation for building a healthy, glowing skin.

Whether you’re focusing on basic, healthy skincare, or a more advanced regenerative treatment, a resilient barrier is a must have starting point. It's also where many clients slip up because they are not prioritizing the importance of their barrier and don't consider it a primary importance in their daily routine.
Understanding the Barrier
Imagine your skin barrier as a brick wall shielding your face from damaging things in the environment. Note that your skin is a living structure. It's made up of cells, lipids, water-binding molecules and microbial life. When you visual this you may understand that while exfoliation is important, it should not be overdone, leaving skin vulnerable to environmental aggressors. Dry skin clients recognize that an emollient layer of moisturizer will protect their sensitive skin, but acne prone skin should also make this consideration. Acne is a condition driven by inflammation. A poor barrier means acne prone skin can become inflamed easily, leading to more blemishes.
So, if the corneocytes in your epidermis are the bricks. The mortar between the bricks is made up of specialized lipids. These are primarily ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids which lock these bricks into place and creates a protective seal. Inside each brick lives Natural Moisturizing Factors: the internal water reservoirs that keep corneocytes hydrated, flexible and able to fit tightly into the lipid mortar. When these internal reserves drop, the bricks dry out, shrink and the entire structure becomes more vulnerable to the environment.
The Bricks: Corneocytes
These are flattened, keratinized cells that make up the outermost layers of the skin. Their job is simple but essential: they create the physical structure of the barrier. When they are well-hydrated and intact, they form a smooth, even, resilient surface.
The Mortar: A Lipid Matrix
Between every corneocyte is a highly organized mixture of ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. These lipids arrange themselves into lamellar sheets that seal the barrier, prevent transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and keep irritants out. Without this "mortar," even the healthiest corneocytes can’t hold the wall together.
Inside the Bricks: Natural Moisturizing Factors
NMFs sit within each corneocyte, acting like built-in humidifiers. This blend of amino acids, sodium PCA, lactic acid, urea, sugars and electrolytes draw water into the cells and helps them stay plump enough to interlock with the lipid mortar. When NMFs are depleted, the bricks lose volume, leading to cracking, flaking and increased reactivity.
The Sealant: The Microbiome
Layered over the entire structure is an invisible "sealant" made up of the skin’s microbiome. This ecosystem acts as the first line of defense, helping regulate inflammation, maintaining a healthy pH, preventing pathogenic overgrowth and supporting wound healing. A balanced microbiome keeps the entire wall more stable and resilient.
Repairing and Maintaining the Barrier
If you think you have a compromised barrier their are steps you can take to rebuild it and keep it strong throughout your life. Paying attention to skin barrier health will help insure your home care regime will succeed. When each step of your routine reinforces structure, hydration and resilience, the skin will stay calm, adaptable and ready for regenerative treatments.
