HA holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water on a large threadlike molecule that sits on the surface of the skin. The newer versions consist of cut up molecules of HA penetrates deeper to seal in moisture and repair the skin barrier. 
Ceramides and Fatty Acids: Ceramides and fatty acids are essential for repairing parched, compromised skin by restoring the skin's barrier, sealing in moisture, and preventing transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
Plant Enzymes: Plant enzymes provide gentle, non-abrasive exfoliation by breaking down the protein bonds between dead skin cells - rather than scrubbing them away. This  makes them ideal for sensitive or dull skin. Key enzymes include papain (papaya), bromelain (pineapple), and fig (ficin) enzymes which brighten, smooth texture, and help unclog pores.
Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs): The right blend of acids gently exfoliates away dead cells by dissolving bonds that hold these cells to the surface of the skin. The problem with many is that the percentages are too high or the pH of the product is too low.
