Fall is Peel Season

Now that the summer is over it's time to think about rebooting your skin. Over the summer, even if you've been careful, most clients experience a heightened build up of cells that make their skin look dull with some uneven pigmentation. Plus, this buildup of cells exacerbates the look of fine lines and wrinkles. For some, the buildup of dead cells intensifies the accumulation of sebum and debris in the pores. This increases the likelihood of breakouts, a bumpy texture and clogged pores.

Fall is Peel Season

At LONGEVITY by Elizabeth Renee we believe that peels are such an efficacious part of a spa therapy that we include a cosmetic peel with every skin treatment at no extra charge. (These peels typically go for $50 to $200). Right after the peel I see immediate improvements in my client's skin. However, when fall rolls around you might decide you want something a bit more, for undoing summer skin damage. You can jumpstart smoother, clearer, brighter skin with a series of our Advanced Peels. Our advanced peels are stand alone treatments typically done every two weeks for best results. Because fall is peel season we you'll get the best results with these new advanced peels.

These phenomenal peels not only exfoliate away dull surface cells and clear pores but address other specific conditions like the spots left behind after a blemish, or yellow areas caused by glycation (which is often associated with too much sugar consumption as well as sun exposure), or unwanted discoloration from old sun damage and hormone changes. Consider creating a more beautiful skin by doing a series of these stand alone advanced peel treatments - you can expect wonderful results!

WHY IS FALL PEEL SEASON?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure that removes dead surface cells to reveal a smoother, clearer, healthier skin. This can be targeted towards blemishes, clogged pores, lines and wrinkles and skin discoloration. It involves an application of various acids directed towards a particular problem. Desquamation and cell turnover is essential for overall skin health and function. Most of all, exfoliation sends messages to the lower germinative layer of the skin to rev up its production of newer, fresher, healthier cells. This is the primary reason for advanced peels in fall - to correct skin concerns and spark skin rejuvenation.

PROBLEMS YOU CAN TREAT WITH COSMETIC PEELS

  • Peels help brighten hyperpigmentation

  • Peels help even skin tone

  • Peels help soften lines and wrinkles

  • Peels help smooth uneven texture

  • Peels help heal blemishes

  • Peels help stimulate collagen synthesis

  • Peels help reduce pore size

  • Peels help diminish old acne scars

Our Advanced Peels do a little extra for your skin. Instead of just focusing on surface texture our Advanced Peels are formulated to be less inflammatory, given that inflammation is one of the hallmarks of unhealthy skin aging. Our peels are in the sweet spot for acidity. Your skin has a pH of about 5.5. Many peels clock in at about 2.5. This discrepancy makes the peel very inflammatory. Out Advanced Peels are formulated at an optimal pH of 3.0 to 3.5 to balance efficacy with gentleness, ensuring they interact with the skin's natural pH to promote exfoliation and skin health while minimizing inflammation and irritation. This pH range is considered the "sweet spot," designed to be effective enough for results without causing chemical burns or severe damage, differentiating them from standard, more aggressive peels.

Our Advanced Peels are specifically designed to combat cell senescence, or cellular aging, in the skin. These peels achieve this effect through a process called selective cellular apoptosis, which distinguishes them from traditional chemical peels. Senescent cells release a mix of pro-inflammatory molecules called SASP, which can cause inflammation and premature aging in surrounding healthy skin cells. Our Advanced Peels suppress SASP to minimize this harmful "neighbor effect".

Our Advanced Peels are also designed to stimulate and regenerate mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell), promoting the fuel necessary for cellular health rather than causing the inflammatory damage associated with traditional peels. By clearing out damaged cells, the peels promote healthy cellular metabolism and mitochondrial biogenesis, which is the creation of new mitochondria.

WHEN NOT TO GET A PEEL

  • If pregnant or breastfeeding

  • If you've been on Accutane within the last 6 months

  • If you have certain autoimmune diseases

  • If you have a cold sore

  • If you are prone to raised keloid scarring

WHY CHOOSE OUR ADVANCED PEELS

Born from my commitment to long-term skin health and healthy skin aging, I have discovered new advanced peel formulas that kick start healthy cell metabolism and optimize how skin cells function. As part of my research I have used these peels on both Dex and myself. The results are truly amazing! They provide the same exfoliation and desquamation benefits of traditional peels but are more effective and less inflammatory.

These advanced formulas aid in initiating cellular autophagy. Autophagy is a process where cells recycle themselves when damaged. These damaged cells are called senescent cells (or zombie cells). They are called that because they aren't alive but they're not exactly dead either. The senescent cells create an inflammatory environment that is passed on to adjacent cells, turning them into zombie cells. This is one of the hallmarks of skin aging.

note: Autophagy is a Greek word that means "self-eating." Autophagy in skin cells is a fundamental process for clearing cellular waste like damaged proteins and organelles to maintain skin health, function, and barrier integrity. It plays a critical role in preventing photoaging from UV damage, regulating skin pigmentation and differentiation, protecting against infections, and influencing the healing of wounds and scars. Proper autophagy is essential for maintaining cellular homeostasis, a youthful appearance, and immune defense in the skin.  If autophagy is not in play there becomes an increased number of senescent cells that exacerbate unhealthy aging. You may be familiar with the term Autophagy if you have undergone intermittent fasting.

Recap: Aggressive Traditional Peels vs. our Advanced Peels:

Aggressive Traditional Peels work by causing a traumatic, inflammatory wound response in the skin, which can result in redness, peeling, and sensitivity that requires several days or weeks of recovery. Our Advanced Peels are formulated to minimize inflammation, allowing for a quicker return to normal activities with only microscopic exfoliation or light flaking. Many clients can even wear makeup or work out shortly after the treatment.

Aggressive formulas can pose a risk for darker or melanated skin tones due to the potential for post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), or darkening of the skin. Our Advanced Peels are formulated with barrier-safe acid levels and a skin-friendly pH, making them safe and effective for all Fitzpatrick skin types, including sensitive and darker skin tones.

Our Advanced Peels are safe and effective even for sensitive skin. The "Polite Peel" is a specific formulation that was designed for sensitive, rosacea-prone, and acne-prone skin, providing gentle resurfacing and barrier repair without the harshness of traditional formulas.

WHAT IS A PEEL SERIES?

We now offer our new peels as stand alone half hour treatments. This means you can experience the exceptional results from these updated formulas independent of other therapies. You can purchase a group of five peels and get the sixth peel for free. These peels should be done every two weeks or once a month depending on your esthetician's recommendation. I highly recommend you complete the series of all six treatments, or try them in groups of three, one now and maybe the other three in a few months. This all depends on the thickness and resilience of your skin.
