Dry skin refers to the amount of oil you are producing. Dehydrated skin is skin that is lacking water. If you have both you need to choose emollient products that contain plenty of humectants (water holding ingredients) in their formula. Inherently dry skin has smaller pores. Although, as you age you may find your pores getting larger as the skin looses tone and flattens out. Dehydrated skin can feel tight, look especially dull and itch or flake. The dehydration part of your routine is very manageable if you just choose the right products. This includes hydrating non-drying cleansers and toners, exfoliating regularly with both AHAs and a mild scrub and boosting your skin with occasional treatments that include a hydrating masque. Dehydration can fluctuate during the year so you might need to adjust your products seasonally. In the winter it can feel incredibly parched and need extra rich emollients.
