Exfoliants
Exfoliation helps to speed up the natural process of sloughing off old, worn-out cells from the surface of the skin. By taking off the uppermost dead layers you expose the newer, plumper, more translucent and prettier skin underneath. It stimulates cell metabolism of the skin to keep skin healthy and younger looking. It also helps clear the pores of debris to reduce clogging, blackheads and the potential for breaking out.
MECHANICAL SCRUBS FOR CELL REMOVAL
Mechanical exfoliators contain minuscule particles that, when rubbed on your skin, dislodge the dead cells. Commercial scrubs often have irregular edges that can create microscopic lacerations that will damage the skin and invite in bacteria. At Elizabeth Renee Esthetics we prefer to use a smooth surfaced scrub which rolls gently over the skin lifting off dead flaky cells.
Take note: Inflamed, problem skin should never use a mechanical scrub directly on inflamed blemishes because it only increases irritation. Try instead using a Salicylic Acid based exfoliant that kills acne bacteria as it clears the pores. Those with blackheads or clogged pores however, do very well with a combination of mechanical and chemical exfoliants.

CHEMICAL EXFOLIANTS
Chemical exfoliators have been revolutionary as pore clearing, skin smoothing, anti-acne and anti-aging actives in today’s most efficacious skincare formulas. They work by effectively dissolving those cells loosened by you scrub. AHA’s like Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid and Salicylic Acid dissolve the glue that sticks dead cells together in the pores and on the surface of the skin. Of these exfoliants Glycolic Acid has the smallest molecule therefore it goes the deepest into the skin. Salicylic Acid (a BHA) may not go in as deep but is the most anti-bacterial and Lactic Acid is gentle and the most hydrating. When used regularly, they send a message to the skin to increase output of new, fresher, younger looking cells.
